What is a Parent Advisory Council?
The Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) funds five Regional Autism Projects, which collectively provide autism services statewide. Each Autism Project has a Regional Parent Advisory Council (PAC) made up of parents or adults with autism. Regional PACs serve as a statewide network of advocates working together to influence policy and services for individuals with autism. PAC members offer advice, consultation, and recommendations to the Missouri Department of Mental Health regarding policy, budget, services, and service providers, among other things.
What are the responsibilities of a Parent Advisory Council?
PACs serve as an advisory council to the Department. They provide invaluable feedback regarding challenges families may face; successful programs or services; access issues; etc. 633.220 RSMo. states PAC responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to:
- Advocacy
- Review of DMH Audits
- Recommendations of Policy & Budget
- Program Planning
- Recommendation of Service Providers
How Can I Join a Parent Advisory Council?
To join a regional PAC you must be a Missouri resident and be an individual with ASD or a family member of an individual with ASD that meets the division’s eligibility requirements to be a client as defined under section 630.005.
