Evidence-Based Practices and Interventions

Inclusion in a Federal List or Registry of evidence-based interventions.

Being reported (with positive effects) in a peer-reviewed journal. Documentation of effectiveness based on the following guidelines:

  • The intervention is based on a solid theory or theoretical perspective that has validated research, and
  • The intervention is supported by a documented body of knowledge - a converging of empirical evidence of effectiveness - generated from similar or related interventions that indicate effectiveness, and
  • The intervention is judged by informed experts to be effective (i.e., reflects and documents consensus among informed experts based on their knowledge that combines theory, research, and practice experience). "Informed experts" may include key community prevention leaders, and elders or other respected leaders within indigenous cultures.

Information on evidence-based practices can be found in SAMHSA's Guide to Evidence-Based Practices on the Web.
