Research is an important tool in pharmaceutical care. Although it is not reasonable to expect all PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residents to become researchers, residents are expected to understand literature and critically appraise evidence prior to application in day to day practice. Knowledge acquired during research can improve the provision of pharmaceutical care and clinical pharmacy practice. In addition, research conducted during a PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency is an asset to those applying for advanced pharmacy positions, as well as fellowship training. Active and meaningful involvement in research during residency promotes the importance of life-long learning in pharmaceutical practice. Successful completion of a residency research project is a graduation requirement for the PGY-2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency.
FSH has a unique opportunity to participate in ongoing research opportunities through a multidisciplinary Research Committee. The resident will attend this committee with their primary pharmacy preceptor once a week throughout their residency unless otherwise specified. The committee is charged with teaching, assisting, and conducting research projects at FSH and/or collaboratively with other DMH facilities. A project that the resident is passionate about will be identified, monitored, and managed through the Research Committee.
The resident will submit their research project as a poster at the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP) meeting and present their findings to hospital administration and to psychiatrists and general practitioners at the General Medical Staff Meeting.
For resident’s that are interested, additional opportunities to publish case reports and review articles are available. On average, residents have published two additional articles, not including their residency project.
