1 West and 2 West are the home to the Competency Restoration Unit. These units receive defendants found incompetent to stand trial and those who require inpatient forensic evaluation. Defendants who are incompetent to stand trial have a major mental illness, brain injury, mental retardation or other condition that is severe enough to cause them to be unable to understand the legal proceedings against them or to cause them serious impairment in working with the defense attorney. Our job is to provide comprehensive, intermediate-term psychiatric care and competency restoration services in order to prepare the clients to return to court and face the charges against them. Because MPC is minimum security, our clients do have a wide range of presenting crimes. Because so many conditions can cause someone to be incompetent, the range of mental disorders we treat is broad. Clients in the program are committed for 180 days at a time, but are returned to court sooner when possible. Treatment is extended longer in cases where challenges are presented.

The Inpatient Pretrial Restoration to Competency Services' theoretical basis is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and focuses on changing faulty cognitions related to treatment and the criminal justice system. Program interventions include the following: stabilization of Axis 1 disorders; evaluation, education and development of readiness for cognitive interventions; court education; evaluation and modification of faulty cognitions related to both the legal system, to the individual client's mental illness, and thorough discharge planning, taking into account the client's ongoing treatment needs and public safety.
