Volunteer Services

Volunteers have been a prime force behind better treatment for the mentally ill. They encourage public concern for better facilities. They have built the chaplain program, assisted with the activity cart, and hold A.A. meetings.

There are many opportunities for community volunteers and student educational experience available throughout the facility. Volunteers and students at SMMHC use their talents and energy to support the efforts of professional staff. Training and education is provided to familiarize volunteers with hospital policies and rules as well as patient interactions. Positions are available for volunteers 18 years and older from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.

Volunteers can provide the social acceptance and reassurance clients need to support their efforts. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to gain training and experience in your area of interest and make a difference in someone's life.

Volunteer Training

As a volunteer, you will learn more about mental illness, treatments, stigma, and other issues that affect the lives of those individuals who live with the illness. By being informed about mental illness and the related issues YOU CAN HELP educate and enlighten your communities, co-workers, friends and neighbors about the needs and rights of people with mental illness. Join our team of professionals and help reduce the stigma of mental illness by volunteering at one of our facilities.

As a volunteer, your acceptance and understanding of people with mental illness cannot be bought. Our patients will benefit by the caring presence that you in your unique and individual manner can provide. It is people like you that can truly make a difference.

The Southeast Region’s philosophy of Volunteer Services is that it provides opportunities by which the many talents and skills of community individuals and groups can be effectively channeled to supplement staff and client services.
