May 2012
- May 20-26: National Prevention Week (Nationwide) - Visit the SAMHSA website for more information and to take the Prevention Pledge. Click the links below to download fact sheets that highlight compelling statistics, information, and resources related to each of the five themes of National Prevention Week 2012:
- Monday, May 21 - Prevention of Underage Drinking
- Tuesday, May 22 - Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Use

- May 21: Orientation to the Revitalized StopBullying.gov (Webinar, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM CDT)
- May 31 - June 1: 2012 Spring Training Institute (Osage Beach, MO) - The SPI provides the opportunity for participants to learn about the latest research in the mental health field regarding evidenced-based treatment, medications and other issues.
Sessions will include the following:
- Keynote address by Major General Mark Graham
- Breakout sessions focused on suicide prevention by Monica Matthieu, PhD, Tamara Hoyt, MSW, LCSW, and Randall Flanery, PhD.
- May 31 - June 1: 2012 National LOSS Conference: Reaching out to Survivors Across the Lifespan (Lincoln, NE) - Keynote speaker is Frank Campbell, PhD, LCSW.
June 2012
- June 2-14: 40 Hour Mid-Missouri Crisis Line Volunteer Training (Columbia, MO) Volunteering with the Mid-Missouri Crisis Line is an excellent experience to list on educational and employment applications.
- June 5: Faith-Based Summit (Jefferson City, MO) - The Missouri National Guard and National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention are sponsoring this one-day summit focused on practical approaches for providing care and support to service members, veterans and their families. There is no fee to attend, however participants must register by May 25th.
- June 6-8: 9th Annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse (Kansas City, MO) - The 2012 conference will feature a series of special sessions on suicide prevention in conjunction with the Missouri Suicide Prevention Project, including the Assessing & Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) workshop. For additional presentations, look for the highlighted items on the full conference schedule. Early bird registration ends May 25th.
- June 9: Six Laps for Suicide Prevention (Charleston, MO) - The Charleston C2000 Coalition is hosting this information and awareness event from 9-11:00 AM at the High School Football Field which will include local speakers and T-Shirts give-a-ways. - June 16: 3rd annual Stuart Eiken Memorial 5K run (Columbia, MO) - Save the date!
- June 20-22: Annual DoD/VA Suicide Prevention Conference (Washington, DC) - Presented by the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

- October 4: National Depression Screening Day (Nationwide) - Learn more about depression, find a screening site near you, or organize your own screening.
- October 6: Greater Kansas City Out of the Darkness Community Walk (Kansas City, MO) - Proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
- October 7: Cape Girardeau Out of the Darkness Walk (Cape Girardeau, MO) - Proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
- October 8: The You-Are-Loved Chalk Message Project (Nationwide) - This is an annual suicide-prevention awareness project that supports LGBTQ youth.
- October 14: Fulton Out of the Darkness Community Walk (Fulton, MO) - Proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
November 2012
- November 4-6: The 9th annual International Bullying Prevention Association Conference (Kansas City, MO) - This year’s conference theme is "The Courage to Act: Working Together to End Bullying".
- November 15: Children’s Grief Awareness Day (Nationwide)
- November 17: International Survivors of Suicide Day will connect survivors from around the world through a live national satellite and Internet broadcast, allowing survivors to share their experiences of loss. Email the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention if you interested in organizing a local conference.

Chemical Suicide: Information for Emergency Responders (Various dates and locations) - The Missouri Emergency Response Commission (MERC) is offering this 3 hour POST approved course throughout the state.
- Visit the Mental Health First Aid website for a list of upcoming MHFA workshops being offered in Missouri. Please contact the instructor for registration details.
- The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention offers regular "Drop-In" Conference Calls for facilitators of local suicide bereavement support groups. For a schedule and details, please visit the AFSP website.
