Behavioral Health Resources

The Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) has compiled a list of external resources to provide additional information on behavioral health, mental illness, and substance use.

Crisis & Immediate Support
  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Missouri - Missouri 988 provides free, confidential, 24/7 crisis support for individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, or suicidal crises. Individuals can call or text 988 to connect with trained crisis counselors and local support resources. 
  • 211 United Way - 211 connects individuals and families with local community resources and support services, including housing assistance, food resources, utility assistance, transportation, and behavioral health services. Services are available 24/7 and can be accessed by dialing 211. 
Mental Illness
  • National Institute of Mental Health - The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH providers science-based information about mental health conditions, treatments, and ongoing research to better understand, diagnose, and treat mental illness. 
  • Mental Health America - Mental Health America promotes mental health through advocacy, education, research, and services. 
  • National Alliance on Mental Illness - The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a nonprofit organization that provides education, advocacy, and support for people with families affected by mental illness. NAMI offers educational programs, support groups, and resources to help people navigate mental health conditions and recovery.  
  • NAMI Missouri: Mental Health Support, Education & Resources - NAMI Missouri provides mental health education, advocacy, support groups, and community resources for individuals and families affected by mental illness across Missouri. 
  • Missouri Mental Health Foundation - The Missouri Mental Health Foundation supports mental health awareness, education, prevention, and recovery initiatives through programs, partnerships, and community outreach efforts throughout Missouri. 
  • Early Psychosis Care (EPC) - The Early Psychosis Center (EPC) provides education, resources, and support focused on early identification and treatment of psychosis and related mental health conditions. 
  • MO Ask Listen Refer - MO Ask Listen Refer provides suicide prevention education and training resources designed to help individuals recognize signs of distress and connect people with appropriate support services. 
  • Mental Health First Aid Training for All | MHFA USA - Mental Health First Aid provides training that teaches individuals how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. 
  • Treatment Advocacy Center - The Treatment Advocacy Center provides education, advocacy, and policy information focused on serious mental illness, treatment access, crisis response, and support for individuals and families affected by severe mental health conditions. 
Substance Use Disorder 
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - SAMHSA is the federal agency responsible for improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery services for mental health and substance use disorders. 
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse - The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) conducts research on the cases and consequences of drug use and addiction. The website provides research-based information about substances, prevention strategies, treatment options, and the science of addiction. 
  • Alcoholics Anonymous - Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a peer-support fellowship for individuals who want to stop drinking alcohol. AA groups are available in communities across the United States and provide free, confidential support through a 12-step recovery program. 
  • Partnership to End Addiction - The Partnership to End Addiction provides resources and support for families dealing with substance use. The organization offers guidance on prevention, treatment options, and strategies to help individuals and families navigate addiction and recovery. 
  • Mental Health & Substance Use Disorder - Provides information and resources related to mental health and substance use disorders, including prevention, treatment, recovery, and support services available through federal programs and partner organizations. 
  • Find Online Addiction Recovery Meetings, Live Meetings, 12 step Programs: In The Rooms - In The Rooms is an online recovery community that offers virtual support meetings, peer support, and recovery resources for individuals affected by substance use and addiction. 
  • Allies in Recovery - Allies in Recovery provides education, tools, and support resources for families and loved ones supporting someone experiencing substance use or addiction. 
Peer & Family Support
  • Al-Anon Family Groups - Al-Anon Family Groups provides support meetings and resources for individuals affected by a family member or friend's alcohol use. Meetings offer peer support and shared experiences for families and loved ones. 
  • Families for Depression Awareness - Families for Depression Awareness provides education, support, and resources to help families recognize and respond to depression, bipolar disorder, and related mental health conditions. 
  • Helping Families Help - Helping Families Help provides education and resources for families supporting loved ones experiencing mental health conditions, including guidance on communication, treatment, and recovery support. 
  • Nar-Anon Family Groups - Nar-Anon Family Groups provides support groups and resources for family members and friends affected by a loved one's substance use or addiction. Meetings are available in-person and online to provide peer support and recovery-focused encouragement. 
  • LEAP Institute - The LEAP institute provides education, training, and communication resources for families and caregivers supporting individuals experiencing serious mental illness and anosognosia, a condition that affects a person's awareness of their illness.
