Photo of Mike NietzelThe Office of the Deputy Director provides leadership and direction for a variety of department and statewide functions that support program operations and services to DMH consumers. These include supervisory responsibility for the Office of Constituent Services, Office of Deaf Services, and the DMH Investigations Unit, as well as other special projects at the Director’s discretion.

Dr. Mike Nietzel was appointed to the position of Department Deputy Director on December 15, 2015, and is a clinical psychologist with a proven record of success in leadership. He most recently served as senior policy advisor to Governor Jay Nixon in the areas of education, mental health, and social services. Prior to serving as senior policy advisor, Dr. Nietzel served as President of Missouri State University and had a long career as provost, administrator and professor of psychology at the University of Kentucky. He has published extensively and served on the editorial boards of numerous journals in the areas of clinical and legal psychology.
